The Jiangxi - Bay of Plenty Relationship was formally established in 2019 to promote friendship, understanding and exchanges between the two regions. The relationship has three main focus areas: Community, supporting community groups to connect with like-minded organisations in Jiangxi and sharing our unique cultures; Youth, providing opportunities for our young people to travel and learn, while building aspiration and capability; Economic, supporting organisations to leverage business opportunities from the closer relationship between the Bay of Plenty and Jiangxi.
The relationship is managed by Eastern Bridge Limited in New Zealand on behalf of the participating organisations, and the Jiangxi Provincial Government's Department of Foreign Affairs in Jiangxi.
The relationship is designed to be inclusive, and we seek participation from local governments, iwi, council controlled organisations, education providers, businesses, community groups and individuals. The more interested and active participants we have involved the stronger and more dynamic the relationship becomes. If you or your organisation wants to become involved please reach out to us through the contact form below.

In December 2023, a delegation from Jiangxi, China, visited the Eastern Bay of Plenty and South Waikato regions of New Zealand. This visit marked a significant reconnection after a three-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The delegation's trip included a stop in the South Waikato District, which is a sister partner to Jiangxi's Yichun city. Here, they met with the Mayor and the Economic Development Manager to discuss potential collaborations in timber processing and the development of pre-fabricated housing.
In Whakatane, the delegation engaged with the Mayor, several councillors, and staff. They explored cultural exchange opportunities and strategies to enhance the relationship between Jiangxi and the Bay of Plenty in a way that benefits both regions.
An important meeting was held with Regional Councillor Campbell, who played a key role in formalising the relationship between the regions in 2019. This meeting highlighted the enduring ties and mutual interests of both parties.
The Opotiki District Council was also a significant stop for the delegation, where discussions focused on developing a solar farm in the area. This highlights a keen interest in sustainable energy solutions and economic development.
Inclusion of the local Iwi was a critical aspect of the visit, with the delegation meeting with representatives from Whakatohea. This meeting underscored the importance of engaging with indigenous communities in these international partnerships.
Besides official meetings, the delegation experienced the local culture and environment. They visited popular sites in Rotorua, Taupo, and Tauranga, tried hunting in Opotiki, and spent a night in tents, immersing themselves in the local way of life.
This visit by the Jiangxi delegation is a step forward in strengthening the international ties and economic opportunities between Jiangxi and New Zealand's Bay of Plenty and South Waikato regions.
